Nurse Barbie
Catherine in a dress, apron and hat by OK Uniforms.

Villaness Action Figures
Catherine in a dark, sculpted Maison Martin Margiela dress.
Chanel Iman in a Alexander McQueen Poison Ivy bodysuit.
Eniko as a female devil wearing a Salvatore Ferragamo dress and Carolina Amato gloves.

Vegas Barbie
Hannelore as a Vegas girl. Ribbons of pink and a waterfall of tulle and flowers on her Marchesa dress. Hat by Philip Treacy.

Liza Minelli Barbie
Abbey as Liza Minelli in a bright Valentino Red dress and Carolina Amato gloves. She rises above the zombie like Catherine and Anja, wearing Giorgio Armani.

Retro Barbies + Starlet
Hannelore wears an Oscar de la Renta dress that seems to be made from an old 70′s couch. Catherine in Marilyn Monroe colors. Ralph Lauren Collection white dress.
Anja hangs out in the dining room in Jean-Paul Gaultier pjs.

Weird ending…
Hannelore in a Paul & Joe polka dot red dress topped with a Zac Posen for Pologeorgis coat. She holds the rope that’s tightly wound around Anja.
Abbey wears a green Lanvin dress with silver Galliano shoes. X-mas scene.

Leashed up, Screaming Ghost Barbie
Anja screams as she suffocates in a white L’Wren Scott cape. Catherine, in a gold Prada dress and gold Prada shoes, covers her ears. Merry X-mas.

Chanel Spring Summer 2010: Latin Lovers Ad Campaign

May 18th, 2010 by tforia

Karl Lagerfeld shot for Chanel’s Spring Summer 2010′s ad campaign.

The following few were stunning when I first laid eyes on them. Since seeing them everywhere, they’re not as special.

This reminds me of vampires…

This one is exceptional–the image wasn’t used as much. I like how dark and desolate it looks. Really contrasts the light and pure nature of the wispy tulle. She is Tess of the d’Urbervilles.

Chanel Videos Galore

Amazing! Chanel content!

Karl Lagerfeld directs several short films featuring models in Chanel.

Remember Now
- a glimpse into the capricious fantasy lifestyle of long legged models who wear Chanel all the time – a bit unsavory. A model in her twenties cozies up to a much older man. Really captures the uneasy feeling that comes with partying with extremely image conscious folks.

They’re all working so hard to look like they’re having the most amazing time. There’s a scene that takes place on the morning after the models hit the club. Everyone is lounging on couches in Pamela’s Villa. Then, out of nowhere, someone says, “let’s dance!” and everyone gets up and switches from lounging and looking tired to being extremely hyper and performing coordinated dance moves–suddenly, they collapse back down again to sleep. I felt their pain for a second. It sucks to have to look so pretty and carefree all the time.

Heidi Mount plays Pamela, who has a party at her “villa”.
Leigh Lazark DJs at the club.

Lagerfeld resurrects St. Tropez’s past through younger emulations of Mick Jagger (Freja Beha Erichsen), Bridget Bardot (Magdalena Frackowiak), and Jane Birkin (Abbey Lee Kershaw).

Vol De Jour – similar flavors, capricious models who blatantly shop lift at several Chanel stores including the one on Rue Cambon

“Paris-Shanghai: A Fantasy” – The Trip That Coco Chanel Only Made In Her Dreams
– A tad bit uncomfortable to watch. Felt the issue of being Politically Correct emerge. Perhaps it’s because it was a bit too politically correct? It’s strange. Also, the Coco in this movie seems a bit insecure and nasty. There are great scenes from her actual apartment.

Despite the uneasy story lines, the dresses, jackets, accessories were all impeccable.

Loved the thermal camera at the fall/winter 2010 show.

The Vanessa Paradis interview was exciting to watch as well.

Prada S/S 2010 Handbags

May 15th, 2010 by tforia

Now that I pass by Prada each morning, I’ve been noticing their hand bag collection.

tforia.com> Earlier last week> Prada's window full of perforated flats and handbag

tforia.com> Friday morning> luggage, canvas, lucite, crystal, and translucent plastic

Here are my favorites from their spring summer collection:

1. A canvas clutch with a Lucite/crystal opening, encased in plastic. It’s like a raincoat with a handles attachment for the clutch. Easy to carry through all sorts of weather–pretty and functional.

prada.com

2. The perforated lunch bag. Great for hot lunches–lets the steam out with minimal damage to the perforated leather.

3. I first saw the translucent purple beach photo print bag in the window. It was encasing another canvas bag. Perhaps Prada is making a case for the handbag raincoat? Buy 2 bags instead of just one.

tforia.com

It’s great alone as a waterproof bag for the beach (minus the non waterproof canvas portions).

4. Prada has an array of reusable totes in their BYOB (“Bring your own Bags”) collection. The prints were too clashy. I like this plain hemp colored one. Very peasant like and modest:

5. A more “serious” tote. The Saffiano Lux shopping tote reminds me of a minimal Birkin bag. No belt.

6. Lastly, a large enough tote to throw a beach blanket in, the Saffiano Traforato Shopping Tote:

I’ve seen the same Nappa Gaufre tote (below) in most Prada media placements. They remind me of Miu Miu bags and seem too heavy for the summer. This flagship bag seems so different from the functionality and summery-ness of the other bags.

2. Saffiano Traforato Satchel (€1.100)

5. Saffiano Lux Shopping Tote (€990)
6. Saffiano Traforato Shopping Tote (€970)
7. Nappa Gaufre’ Shopping Tote (€1.580)

Vogue April 2010: Changing Directions

April 20th, 2010 by tforia

US Vogue reports a supposed trend in women’s apparel: long skirt lengths for day wear, short skirt lengths for evening.

The events they have for this imaginary woman:

11 am “Meet the Clients”
“Ann Demeulemeester’s lean, lanky whites would command respect at, say, a SF architect’s draft presentation.”

9pm “Curtain Up”
“Opening night at the Tribeca Film Festival”

11pm “The Boom Boom Room”
“pint size party girls” enjoying “Hudson River views from a cozy leather banquette”

2pm “Weekend Poetry Reading”
“offbeat romance” “unexpectedly revealing or concealing underthings”

10am “The White House”
“Easter lawn party”

7pm “Table for Two”
“sharing usuzukuri sashimi with your date in South Beach”

3am “Chateau Marmont”
“roof deck of the hush-hush penthouse suite”

9am “Dotting Yourts”
“Impress your new editor”

3pm “Fielding Pitches”
“authority of the creative director at a marketing agency”

My favorite look in the entire magazine:  head to toe Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquière.

dress $5455 belt $375 brass bracelet $465 tights $70 suede platform wedges $1495

6pm “Private Preview”
“Working the Chicago crowd at the ‘Next’ emerging-art fair”

5pm “Coachella”
“Vampire Weekend playing”

8pm “Grand Entrance”
“New Museum’s Brazilian-themed spring benefit”

As always, these women are art/music/literature enthusiasts who work in creative/media/marketing.  They travel between LA, NYC, Chicago and Miami.

I don’t imagine most women in the suggested industries (in the real world) could afford these looks.  Are they simply creating appeal for women who wish they could live like this?   and who can afford it?

American Stories: Miami

The Tommy Hilfiger‘s 2010 Spring campaign is beautiful. Although I’m not a fan of Hilfiger, it’s nice to see that they put together something tasteful.

The clothing is plain, as always. Stripes and solids–signature Tommy Hilfiger. They’re more like a high end Gap with more stripes and more red/white/blue. I’ve never been attracted to the brand by any previous campaign. Perhaps it’s because I love Miami?

The photos are ethereally tinted gold, and the simple stripes are supported by images of art deco. This classy story is successfully used to enhance Tommy Hilfiger‘s mediocre designs.

Ice Cube Painting

April 9th, 2010 by tforia

I like these blocks.

DavidZwirner.com

Marlene Dumas at David Zwirner
Mental Blocks, 2009

They look a bit melted like ice cubes in warm air, but more like blocks from a construction site. After all, ice cubes don’t come so cubed these days. The colors of each block show different material qualities: glass, concrete, steel, stucco…representing different types of blocks a person can have internally? I’m not going to make any sort of interpretation besides thinking about pretty colors, implied textures and shapes. Most of the other pieces in this collection are paintings with people touching and praying at the white Western Wall. It would be a treat to look at on a hot summer day.

Phobe Philo style in clothing and ad campaign. Lighting reminds me of Juergen Teller’s Marc ads–the bright flash makes the images look a bit more candid. Gives life to the model mannequins.

Saw this ad in “AnOther Magazine” and no where else. Really like the casual, off centered font.
