Model as Muse at Bergdorf Goodman

Monday, May 18th, 2009

Bergdorf Goodman is currently promoting the Model as Muse exhibition at the Met with their interpretation of iconic photo shoots from Vogue. The mannequins were of much better quality at Bergdorf than at the Met–mannequins used in the exhibition had cracks and holes in them. Images of Cindy, Naomi, Kate, Linda, Claudia, and many other supermodels are celebrated in the iconic images displayed in the Bergdorf windows.

How Matthew Williamson for H&M compares with Matthew Williamson the collection

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

I tried to find the closest pieces of clothing from the H&M collection that resembled the Matthew Williamson Spring or Summer 2009 collection. Here are the closest items:

mw_skirt

The blue is much more florescent in the H&M version. The volume is there but not much else.

mw_shirt

The peasant shirt is much closer in comparison. The “mosaic sequin peasant blouse cream” is much more off white than the H&M version. At $99.90 you can get something close.

mw_dress

The dress, however, is miles away from being close. At $99.90, you’re better off getting the peasant shirt.

Overall, the Matthew Williamson for H&M collection is not that close to the Matthew Williamson collection. The color pallet is reminiscent of Matthew Williamson, however, the silhouettes and fabric prints definitely do not resemble anything Matthew Williamson-esque. It’s like they took basic H&M dresses, tops, bottoms, and painted H&M clothing with colors and vague shapes that somewhat resemble Matthew Williamson from afar. Besides the peasant shirt, the collection as a whole is not worth the extra dollars you would spend per item at H&M.

Urban Zen + Tonic

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

I’m sorry. I’m going to have to bash Urban Zen once again.

Urban Zen is collaborating with Tonic and they are coming out with these hideous shirts that are made of organic cotton and bamboo. They go for $65 and according to the press release:

“Consumers can shop with a clear conscious as all products are eco-friendly, fair trade and fair labor.”

(the PR guys seem to have used the wrong “conscious”. They mean conSCIENCE. Have they no conscience?!)

The existence of MORE products so CONSUMERS can shop more “with a clear conscious [conscience]?” Who at this time is spending money with a clear conscience?

What does it mean to save the planet with more eco-friendly products? Let’s produce more products, emit more CO2 and say we did it in a green fashion. How about not emitting more and not creating $65 t-shirts that look hideous?

Here’s Urban Zen’s call to action on going green:

“Save Our Planet
The limited edition bamboo tee is available in black, green and white and helps the Urban Zen Foundation to create, connect and collaborate to raise awareness and inspire change. By designing forums, partnering with existing organizations and bringing together experts to define solutions and implement action, the foundation makes real progress towards protecting our environment and saving the planet.”

More of the fashion crowd thinking they know how to save the world–everyone! buy a t shirt, we can all be eco friendly together! yea! yea!

WWD puts it in their “chic” report–haha!
