It’s hard to believe Madame Grès designs were made so long ago.  Below is a pre-1950′s dress that looks comfortable and beautiful.  The exaggerated pleating is made by sewing elastic onto the inside of the dress.  The simple draping and pleating make the dress seem so simple and modern.  Now on view at the Met Costume Institute exhibit, American Woman:  Fashioning a National Identity.

They look a bit melted like ice cubes in warm air, but more like blocks from a construction site. After all, ice cubes don’t come so cubed these days. The colors of each block show different material qualities: glass, concrete, steel, stucco…representing different types of blocks a person can have internally? I’m not going to make any sort of interpretation besides thinking about pretty colors, implied textures and shapes. Most of the other pieces in this collection are paintings with people touching and praying at the white Western Wall. It would be a treat to look at on a hot summer day.

A joint curation between the 7eleven gallery and Nick Poe features art by New York artists. The art is playful and features youthful motifs–Sylvester the cat, colorful dinosaurs, and a wall hanging reminiscent of road runner cartoons decorates an industrial space in Chelsea.

Here’s a reminder: it’s A|X time!

The exhibit is currently being set up at the Guggenheim. I stopped by yesterday and there were many pieces influenced by the art of Chinese calligraphy–interpreted by Americans. Different colors, different strokes and thickness of paints used to describe the fascination these American artists had with Asian art.
